Bronx E. Tremont Avenue Is
The New Restaurant Row
By Andrew Perretti
I had the pleasure of attending the
Bronx Chamber Of Commerce
Contractor's Expo on October 24,
2006 at Maestro's Caterers. The
Bronx Borough President Adolfo
Carrion was on hand for a symbolic
ribbon cutting ceremony or sorts,
along with other local elected
officials. Something the Borough
President included in his speech
was the inspiration for this article.
He described the Bronx twenty
years ago as an economically
depressed community, with burned
out buildings and empty lots. Today,
however, the unemployment rate is
at its all time low, and a building
boom has made the Bronx a truly
desirable place to live. One of the
many neighborhoods that has been
sought by upper middle class
working families is Throgs Neck, a
community built along E. Tremont
Avenue from the East River to
Brukner Boulevard. That prolific
commercial span is chocked full of
fine restaurants, eateries, and bars.
The tour of restaurant row begins
at the intersection of Miles Avenue
where Tosca Cafe set up shop. On
the other side of the street is
Casey's, a local sports bar with an
appropriate menu designed for
fans to munch throughout extra
innings. Up the block is Spoto's
which not only was recently
renovated, but has a banquet room
as well. Diagonally across the
street is Rino's which has two
banquet rooms. The next stop is
two blocks away where The Latin
Kitchen is presently celebrating its
Grand Opening. The demand for
Spanish cuisine made it possible
for this eatery to expand from a two
table take out place to a full service
restaurant in just two short years.
A leisurely stroll up the block
brings us to Patricia's which we
recently rated. A hop skip and a
jump further west is Fiddler's
Elbow, where you can have dinner,
listen to music and bet the ponies!

Tyler Florence's Search For His Flagship
Restaurant In NYC
By Andrew Perretti
I now know what it's like to become a fan of a celebrity after
the fact. The first time I me Tyler I was part of a management
consulting team for a Soho based real estate firm which
manages many of its own properties. Essentially, the owner
of the firm hired me to sit in our his negotiations and feed
back pros and cons based upon proposals from perspective
tenants. This consulting has put me in the same room with
representatives of some very famous celebrities, however,
rarely does a star show up to be included in their own
negotiations. Tyler did in fact attended this meeting which
lasted about one hours. The facts as they relate to that
property, the lease agreement, and the restrictions on that
venture imposed by Community Board #2 and the Landmark
Commission were all put on the table. Tyler was excited
about this particular property for several reasons. The
building has an artistic history. Its former owner, Arturo
DiModica, designed the "Running Bull" which stands on
Wall Street, sold it to the Pasquale brothers back in
2003. The brothers were willing to lease it long term.
Formerly known as Studio DiModica, the building is
next door to the rear entrance of Bloomingdale's Soho
location. The French Culinary Institute is just two
blocks away. Other world famous eateries nearby
include Cipriani's, Balthazar's, Le Orange, and Little
Italy is a five minute walk. This would have been the
perfect place for Tyler's brand new flagship restaurant.
In fact at the conclusion of
the meeting, Tyler shook my
hand and said "Andrew, I
really want to make this
happen." So did I especially
since he already agreed to
invite my mother (his biggest
fan) to the grand opening.
The long and short of the
matter is that the local
community made it impossible
to move this project forward
due to local liquor licensing
restrictions. More to come...
