Da Enzo On Ninth
By Andrew Perretti
I had the pleasure of dining with the very talented Michelle De Los Santos
on Thursday, October 12, 2006. When I called on Michelle at her 37th
street flat just off of 8th Avenue, I taxed my brain to recall a good place to
eat within walking distance. I remembered having lunch at Manganaro's
on Ninth during the N.Y. International Boat Show last January, so we
literally walked up the block and around the corner. I didn't recognize the
place when we got there. The legendary Hero Boy was all grown up and
transformed into a very elegant restaurant. During the day, Manganaro's
Hero Boy is the premier lunch spot on the block. Now, with major
renovations completed, Da Enzo is poised to be the place to eat on the
West side.
Our waiter Roberto lead us to a private booth under a magnificently paint
ceiling (see the picture at the bottom of the page). Mood lights sets the
tone for a quaint late night supper. Michelle is an artisan and a designer.
She crafts personalized healing jewelery, and is in the process of
introducing her own clothing line. When she looked up at the ceiling, I
could see from the look on her face that the it was worth every penny Enzo
paid. There is also a picture of a window on the wall next to one of two
wine racks which give you the impression you are looking out onto a street
scene.
The decor is just one of the reason why you must eat at Da Enzo. The
other more important reason is the food! Everything is prepared fresh the
day it is served. The daily specials are between $22 to $30 (which is very
reasonable for 37th street fine dining. The fixed menu prices range from
$14 for spaghetti al pomodoro fresco, to $42 for aged Porterhouse steak
served with roasted potatoes and broccoli rabe. I ordered Linguine allo
scogio which was absolutely delicious. The homemade linguine with a
light sauce, clams, muscles, shrimp, scallops, and pieces of fresh fish.
Michelle had a four cheese ravioli in a creme sauce. I tasted a piece and it
was yummy!
There are two wine lists with prices ranging from $25 to $90 on one list,
and from $125 to $995 on the other. It's safe to say that Enzo has the right
bottle of wine for anyone. We had a Venica Merlot and a Planet
Chardonnay which is what everyone should do when you can't decide
between red and white.
The service at Da Enzo can only be described as old world giving you the
patron the feeling that you are most welcomed and very important. Our
waiter Roberto was dressed in a fine suit and looked more like an owner
than a server. The attention to detail was impeccable. We were treated
partly like family and part V.I.P. which makes for a most pleasant dining
experience.
There is no doubt in my mind that even the most discriminating palates
will certainly be pleased at this very personal and elegant west side
restaurant. I promised Enzo a follow up visit when I will introduce some of
my close friends and business associates to dining ala Enzo. I will let you
all know the outcome of that event after it unfolds.
