Eileen Miyoko Olszewski: Flower-
Blossoms at the Beacon
By David Pambianchi

On May 18, 2007, at the historic Beacon
Theatre, with its twin 30 foot Greek statues of
warrior women, polished bronze, white Marble
floors and Art Deco design, Junior
Bantamweight Eileen Olszewski faced Kimberly
Tomes for a scheduled 6 round bout.

In 1928, the Beacon Theatre opened to silent
films, tonight’s first round remained uneventful.
But during the second round, Eileen’s ability to
weave, duck, and evade foretold this match
would go rough for Kimberly. Eileen’s left hook
started to take a toll and opened Kimberly’s
nose to a torrent of crimson that would flow
throughout the bout. Yet Eileen’s tendency to
keep her left glove down cost her some points,
for while it taunts her opponent’s left jab and
right hand, a tough Kimberly got in and did
some scoring of her own each round.

Amid the theatre’s martial motifs of lions, chariot
relief’s, Coat of Arms, helmets and swords,
hands finally up in the sixth round, Eileen came
out in full form with combinations of lefts and
rights to score heavily.

Kimberly fought hard and with heart, but this
Friday night, King Kamehameha ruled as Eileen
"The Hawaiian Mongoose" won a unanimous
decision.
