| Youth Yachting Program A Program of the ANDROID Foundation Mission Statement: The Youth Yachting Program provides educational and economic opportunity for teens fifteen years and up with working papers. The program combines practical training and classroom education to its clients, with the mission of creating enthusiasm for the maritime industry. Its mission has a two fold goal of giving youth opportunity and education, and is the first of its kind to integrate a for profit administration with multiple not for profit organizations. The reason behind its unique administrative protocol is to allow all of the hundreds of local not for profit organizations access to a worth wild program. The purpose of a for profit administration, is to present a model which can be duplicated nationwide in all coastal areas, include lakes and rivers. Not For Profit Enrollment (NPO) There are scores of local organizations, civic and community associations, clubs, groups, and other not for profits already in existence. These organizations are already structured and serve their membership and the community. All of these groups can elect to set up a Youth Yachting Committee to identify and fund the youth in its membership or service area, and enroll them in the program. The committee elects a Youth Yachting Coordinator who interacts with the program administrator. Each not for profit is responsible for its own local fundraising events and budget. The coordinators of each group sit on the administrative advisory committee which meets once each month from May to September, and every other month during the off season. For Profit Administration (FPA) In order to streamline national implementation, a for profit administrative model is used to keep operating costs low, and prevent the program from relying on public funds for its continuity. There are no salaries. The local administrators are paid a percentage of the gross receipts. Administrative Responsibilities 1. Chairs monthly meetings with local coordinators. 2. Supports fundraising events. 3. Assists with the development of NPOs budgets. 4. Identify special needs. 5. Provides marketing and promotional support. 6. Assists with the identification and development of local sponsors. 7. Coordinates public relations. 8. Interfaces with local, state and national government. 9. Over-sees education and job placement. 10. Provides contract administration for privately owned, U.S. Coast Guard Certified Vessels used to facilitate the program. Program Design The program is designed as a three (3) hour laboratory where youth report to a vessel versus a land based classroom. Students are referred to as either: campers or crew. There are ten (10) campers and five (crew).
Educational & Economic Benefits All participants names are appear on a roster which is signed by the captain. The roster is put into the Youth Yachting data base, and each camper and crew member receives credit toward their captain's license. The crew can qualify for semester hours applicable for college credits (this program aspect requires pre-qualification). Campers benefits are three fold: 1. Recreational - the tour of the Long Island Sound is designed to create enthusiasm in the maritime area, and increase interest in water sports. 2. Educational - campers that want to continue with the program can qualify to be upgraded to crew. 3. Economic - in addition to educational benefits, crew earn as they learn. Selection Of Campers The program is open to all youth fifteen years and up with working papers. The significance of requiring working papers, is that all campers are evaluated and receive free job counseling. There are manifold reasons for this aspect of the program: 1. Attract youth to the program 2. Direct participants to age appropriate income sources 3. Help build knowledge, skills & abilities for resumes 4. Build confidence in all who participate in the program (this is a preview of the program overview - to be continued) |
