June has been an exciting month for theater in New York. Besides the
well- known Tony Awards, and the Theater World Awards presentation.
These awards are given to upcoming and debuted new talent. Then the
new talent becomes the well – known talent such as Alec Baldwin.
Alec Baldwin won his award many years ago, and has been presenting
the award to upcoming talent for a few years. Such plays as “In the
Heights” – composer, and “Passing Strange”, and Xanadu add the
newcomers to the list. Peter Filicia was the MC. And songs highlighted
the presentations. There was an after-party at Cascina Ristorante, and
we all had a great time.
THE THEATER MUSEUM PANEL
By: Demetria Daniels
Recently the Theater Museum, located in The Palace Theater on Broadway and W.48 St
presented a panel of experts on “The Impact of Jewish Culture on Broadway Theater”. The
experts included producer Stewart F. Lane, who’s current productions are “Legally Blonde”,
“Sunday in the Park With George”
And “39 Steps”, distinguished television and radio personality Joe Franklin, the pioneer of TV
interviews, who hosted the first television talk show, and wrote 23 books including “Up Late with
Joe Franklin”, 3-time Tony Award winning Composer Charles Strouse of “Annie” fame, and the
upcoming “The Night They Raided Minsky’s” and singer-songwriter Dr.Susan Horowitz. The
Museum’s purpose is to preserve, protect and perpetuate the legacy of theater. It is a non-profit
Educational corporation . It was a nostalgic evening indeed. Stella Adler once said “speak
Brittish, think Yiddish”.
As early as 1914, burlesque was the most popular entertainment in New York. And everything
was Jewish from then on. Irving Berlin who wrote the most popular Christmas song in history
“White Christmas” was Jewish. Ed Wynn, Milton Berle Burt Lahrs, Danny Kaye, Eddie Cantor,
Jack Benney all followed each other in history.
And lets not forget that it was the Jewish-garde that founded Hollywood too.
