Oh Listen Sister: Pow!!! Wow!!!
"Women in the Arts"
March rolls in like a lioness in the Big Apple with a month
long "Women in the Arts" celebration in tandem with National
Women's History Month. Events heat up the action with
museums, arts organizations and galleries focusing on the achievements of women in the arts over the past two
centuries.
There's a month-long series of citywide events. However, today (3/3) is the last day you can attend the
"Works on Paper" exhibition at the Park Avenue Armory at 67th Street so hustle your bustle it's open from
11-5PM. My pick at Riverhouse van Straaten (Riverhouse Editions) is Cuban born, Maria Elena Gonzalez, an
internationally known sculptor whose drawing and printmaking repertoire includes large prints depicting two
electrical towers--imagery which at once articulates modern life's beauty and uncertainty. Katherine Bowling's
prints have a mysterious appeal with beautiful pale blue veil of color to soften and blur the image of leafless, thin
maple tress by a small field. Contact info@RiverhouseEditions.com.
My pick at ACA Galleries is Faith Ringgold's "Jazz Series" and so great is her oeuvre that a museum is being
built at l55 St. in Harlem to house her works. It took 400 women over a span of 5 years to create the remarkable
39 remarkable plates for Judy Chicago's awesome exhibit called the "Dinner Party" which is on view at the
Brooklyn Museum. Her masterful works can also be seen at ACA, 529 W. 20th St, 5th floor.
For fashion aficionados need look no further than to Leonard Fox, purveyor of rare illustrated books and
works on paper from the 20th century. In a tribute to women this booth laid out a collection of rare and
collectible illustrations and fine books. The Gazette de Bon Ton, published between 1912 and 1925 is a
splendid work that handsomely portrays the fashion and social scene of the era while handsome handmade
papers and labor-intensive print work identify with the French couturier Paul Poiret's genre. Also at Leonard
Fox, 790 Madison Ave.
Too busy today then consider these events. Galleries throughout the city continue women's recognition
month. Structured Incidents, an A.I.R. Gallery National Artists group exhibition has an opening reception March
6th, 6-8 PM. 511 W. 25th St. Suite 30l. Just show up.
Art Walk Chelsea, the first annual tour of galleries exhibiting prominent women artists on March 8 starts at
lPM, at the ACA Galleries at 529 W. 20th St., 5th floor. Check tics and reservation status. In between there are
film discussions March 9 and l9th and for complete program details log www.sanfordsmith.com.
Not to be missed on March 28th is the National Women's History Project High Tea and Honoring Ceremony
with 2008 honorees Judy Chicago, Faith Ringgold, Harmony Hammond, Lorna Simpson and Nancy Spero to
name a few. 2-5PM, The Puck Building, 298 Lafayette Street. The gala launches an evening of art, music,
poetry and dance, 5-9PM, same location.
Join the final celebration "A Tribute of Cultural Diversity of Women's Art Exhibition with Molly Murphy
MacGregor, founder of National Women's History Month at brunch, noon-2pm, Pen and Brush, l6 E. 10th St.
Tickets and reservations for these events are a must, so reserve at www.airgallery.org.
Now if you'd like to sit down and buzz about all these doings join me at The Crooked Knife, 29 E.30th St.,
where owners Dermot and Pat have created a cozy fireplace ambiance with great American food at reasonable
prices. Don't be surprised if your waitress is a budding actress because the restaurant is right around the
corner from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts where the likes of Grace Kelly, Kirk Douglas and Robert
Redford had their start.
Well, ta ta!!! Let's celebrate Women in the Arts and let's celebrate the fact that You are an achiever too!!!
