'SPRING AWAKENING'…MUSIC IN
THE AIR
Spring awakens our senses to a glorious
unfolding of poetry
and music, and choruses throughout the city rise
to the occasion and fill the air with glorious song.
What could more delightful to greet this "jeune
saison" (young season) than the celebrated
French composer, Claude Debussy's charming
piece, "Salut Printemps" (greetings to spring. This
delightful work is included in the repertoire in the St. George's Choral Society's annual Spring
Concert, Sunday April 13th, at 4PM in historic St. George's Church, 209 East 16th St., at

Artistic director and conductor, Matthew Lewis a luminary in the musical orbit in New York City,
has culled together an impressive choral society of men and women singing the signature piece of
the concert, Zoltan Kodaly's masterful work, "Missa Brevis." I'll be there singing in the chorus, too
so I'll be looking for you at the reception following the concert. On a lighter note is French
composer, Lili Boulanger's, spiritually inspired Psaume 24. ST. GEORGE'S CHORAL SOCIETY is

Get in a marching mood and step lively down to the FIT Haft Auditorium, 237 W. 27th St. for a
fabulous evening with the magical revival of Meredith Willson's "The Music Man," performed by
the Village Light Opera Group, Friday, April 11th. The performance will benefit CITY CRITTERS,
INC., a wholly volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and
rehoming of cats in need. Cost $100 with 5:30-7:30PM buffet dinner and drinks at Mustang

Ding Dong the Bells are Ringing by the New York Chapter of the AMERICAN BELL
ASSOCIATION calling all bell collectors to come to the Metropolitan Museum of Art for a "Bell-E-
ration Time" in the Musical Instruments office, Saturday, April 19th at 2PM. Joe Petnick, the Met's
Musical Instruments Department will be "disc-jockey" and play recordings of Bell Sounds from
Holland, Macedonia and Russia. Al Trinidad, author of 2 books on Glass Bells will present slides

Life is a Cabaret at the Neue Galerie, 1048 Fifth Ave., (86th St.) where Marta Eggerth with David
Maiullo at the piano provide the evenings entertainment at CAFÉ SABARSKY, Thursday April 10th
and 17th. A living legend, Marta Eggerth reigned as queen of Viennese operetta in the l940's and
50s and appeared in over 40 films in Europe and the U.S. Her elegance, charisma and pure

Reciting her poetry, singing and playing a guitar, Lily Georgick takes the limelight in the
COMPOSERS, AUTHORS and ARTISTS of AMERICA meeting while Max Nemerovsky, recites
poems about New York City with tap dancing accompaniment. Attend a wonderful poetry program

Suzanne Halasz, daughter of Halasz, the famed conductor, tells us about yet another musical
marvel, the OPERA FOR HUMANITY, founded by Amy Shoremount-Obra (soprano Metropolitan
Opera) as a way to use opera to help others. It is a New Jersey non-profit opera company and its
artists perform at first rate opera houses and have received international acclaim for their
