IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE,
NEW YORK SINGS

music, "O! it came o'er my ear like the sweet
sound." Senses collide in the last concert of
summer, opera at the movies, galleries and
celebrations, where music, the elixir of life, steals
the show and New York's rhythm town hits the
high notes in venues both visual and sensual.

CULTURAL DOINGS: TIMOTHY HITS
THE COLOR TRAIL

Timothy high brow met up with Tilly the culture
maven and off they did shuffle to paint the town
Red. "My dearest dear," said he. "New York's
awash in color cues. We'll get our color fix at the
Bus Terminal, see Van Gogh' Starry Night, and
get (In) formed by Color a la Carlos Cruz-Diez.
Then Art Deco is another echo at NYPL. Shall we
linger for awhile?"  Tilly obliged with a smile.

Lollapalooza Events in the City...
Go For It!!!

"What's all this talk about leisure?" Simple Sally pouted. "I'm
Colonel-in-Chief of the Guides, on several committees, and  frequently
lecture with slides. So with this and that, and the garden you see, my
life is as full as a woman's could be. " So Simple Simon took her in
hand so she might understand, that nowadays with books and plays
and all sorts of fun to raise, New York's a lollapalooza, "Forget about
duties," he said. "Let's go for it and take in the town instead. >

DayTripping With Simple Simon/Simple Sally

Simply Sally shimmed back and forth, her patience at its end.
"I rather fancy a trip abroad. Yes, you see I'm terribly bored," she
declared unaware that Simple Simon had a plan or two. So
hand-in-hand, and oh, what weather, he took her off light as a feather,
and hopped the Staten Island ferry to another port. Simple Sally went
girlish and gay and all through the day she was soppy and silly, as any
young filly, reveling in the sights of the town. Come join us she beckons,
what a fine voyage she reckons. "It's divine," she did say,
"To daytrip it away." >

ONE DAY TRIPS: SIMPLE SALLY VENTURES OUT
OF TOWN

Simple Simon met a pieman going to the fair, along came Simple
Sally and now they are a pair!!!" All day long o'er hill  and dale they
wander out of town. So where do people go? I adore Soho, but
someone said that Stamford was nice, for I've visited it once or twice.
Ah, youth should never pause from pleasure, fill your cup and trip
beyond measure. So does it matter where we go?  "Not in the least,"
says Sally with a dimple, my tastes are very simple. So take the train
and away we go." >

SUMMER CULTURE: COUNTRY BUMPKINS COME
TO TOWN

Simple Sally hates the city, for she loves the open down, and perhaps
it is a pity, she remains so much in town. Little think that she is pining
for the heather or the hay. Nay, her tastes are simple, instead she
stays and roisters in her shy and reluctant way, painting the town with
revel in museums and outdoor concerts sitting on the ground. >

SEISMIC SHIFTS IN FASHION SPENDING

What do ladies talk about when ladies leave the room? The talk of
course, is more refined and fashion isn't left behind. The hose and
hat and scarf and sleeve, the price of silk and sable---this type of
thing engrosses Eve, but if you please, more than that today they
dish and spat, the price of this and that, no doubt. But still the
seismic shifts in spending is their undoing, for now the rising cost of
things, politics, trade and education, Do You Believe, is all that they
can talk about. So read on my fashionistas, it's not a laughing matter. >

ARTFUL VENTURES: ILLUMINATI SECRETS

Some girls I know would rather they were beautiful than clever, but
beauty's brief, I always say, while wisdom lasts forever. That's the
reason I respeck those who love me for my intelleck and not
because I'm a pretty painting on a museum wall or an exhibition they
install. Why my dear, that is why I'm so glad they love me for my brain.
It's much more satisfact'ry, I should say, so I will carry on in an intellectual
way and join the Illuminati in this artful way. (A.P.Herbert) >

The Glitterati Lions…Were You There?

All the lions stood a-roaring and you could not see the flooring for the literary men; novelists
discussed together metaphysics and the weather, claret, sandwiches, and sin, while the painters
and musicians shyly mentioned their ambitions and the women drank it in. Then said Mr. Y
politely to jolt the literary zoo, "Have you heard the works of Horse?" " Everybody knew they
knew, "Yes, of course," said everybody. Did he paint, compose or write? Why is he not here
tonight? >

Culture Vultures: Take New York On the Cheap

What New York on the Cheap??? That's right art exhibits, museums, poetry and book signings,
concerts, recitals, lectures and all kinds of cultural events are FREE for the taking or you pay a
minimum charge that won't break your budget.

I'm not ancient but I remember the Metropolitan Museum of Art when it was free and there was
hardly anyone there, but today it’s a madhouse as crowds swarm in droves to this Mecca of
culture. The museum open Tues-Sun was closed to the public every Monday for 30 years, but
now the museum is open on "Met Holiday Mondays" starting with President's Day, February 18th
and again on May 26th Memorial Day. If you can't afford the steep admission fee, remember it is
'Suggested Admission,' so give what you can afford, even one dollar and you'll get in.>

cram in to get a glimpse of what the designers are touting as the new trend, the new color or the
new silhouette. The fashion show extravaganza also takes place in other locations and ends
February 8th, setting sail it returns with the spring ready-to-wear collections in October. >

Aspects of Luxe---Haughty Ha Ha, Here's to Haute Couture!

Haute defined denotes the elevated upper crust of society, so it is no wonder that nowadays
there are haute people living in haute skyscrapers, walking haute dogs, housing haute cats,
eating haute cuisine and dining in tony haute restaurants and flying in haute airplanes. BUT,
there is nothing more sumptuous in this exalted state than the Haute Couture collections, which
climaxed in Paris with the final curtain call for designer, Valentino, who paraded exquisite sorbet
