Anita Van Horn, Blush magazine's fashion editor extraordinaire, sits in Row One, at the Spring 2009 collections. "Why I declare!!!" It's Fashion Week in New York and there sits Banana the Bore mum as a cat. Her clothes come from Paree 'an she flaunts it with glee. Hauty Van Horn throws her a deliberate snare, cause she reigns as queen at this affair. She scribbles away about this and the that; paparazzi click and the clack as runway shows pull up on the track. Here's the scoop.
The buyers, the press and guests cue up with invitation in hand. These shows are strictly business. "Oh, it's terribly unfair," declares a wannabe fashionista. Don't you think the public ought to have a chance to see at least one of the runway shows?" Not a chance but inside the tents the shows take second fiddle to the likes of Van Horn whose chic is renowned as is her page boy hairdo and horn rimmed sunglasses. All eyes focus on this doyen of fashion as she views the Mercedes-Benz sponsored Fashion Week shows. Under the white tents that loom up like a magical kingdom in Bryant Park the designer elite of the fashion world pay a price that far exceeds the basic $200,000 to put on a show. Famous designers like Oscar will be there right along with von Furstenberg and Lauren, but other designers like Marc Bouwer, who believes in making fashion more democratic, will unveil his spring collection on his web site www.marcbower.com. Check TV listings for daily coverage of the fashion show extravaganza. The finalists of Project Runway will show their collections on September 12. You can read all about the fashion industry in my book, Creative Fashion Presentations, go to www.Amazon.com.
Talking democratic fashion, never underestimate the Power of Politics and Celebrities. Take Michelle Obama's recent appearance on The View, for instance. The wife of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama caused a media sensation when she wore a black-and-white printed dress by Donna Ricco on the show. The dress manufacturers rallied to the opportunity, put similar styles in production, consumers immediately snapped up the cotton dress and it sold out nationwide. This election year may turn the candidates' wives into fashion arbiters. Cindy McCain has elected to approximate Nancy Reagan's hallmark Chanel-style suits, while Obama seems to be challenging Jackie Kennedy's iconic look of A-line dresses and power pearls. www.cottoninc.com. If all else fails, designer Michael Kors advises, "The right accessories can make an outfit."
Friends of Black Tie Magazine, that's all about celebrities and philanthropy, know a thing or two about haute fashion. Couture Fashion Week at the Luxury Exposition Showcase at the Westin Hotel, Sept. 5-7, is the site for prestigious designers who will be strutting their stuff. Black Tie will be listing late breaking news on a daily basis. www.blacktiemagazine.mobi.
Buzz, Buzz read all about it. Anita Van Horn with her hauty fashion persona stepped up to the plate and was chatting away with Alaska governor Sarah Palin, the Republican running mate. She was amazed to learn that Palin's everyday style consists of wearing layers of fleece and a good outdoor waterproof trail shoe. According to Women's Wear Daily, the newspaper bible of the fashion industry, her style is more Patagonia than Prada. Palin donned corporate business attire, however, a black skirt suit, glasses, and an updo at the announcement in Dayton, Ohio. It is obvious that her youthful vigor has captivated viewer interest and she's no stranger to fashion. Featured in the February, Vogue Magazine, in her home in Wasilla, Alaska Palin wore Ralph Lauren, Levi's and Maxmara for the shoot. However, Palin joked that her favorite designers were outdoor brands including The North Face. www.wwd.com.
Well darlings, shall we two be tramping through the woods in outdoorsy fashion style like that Palin woman? The test of time will tell. Tune in next week as Fashion Week spins another yarn. Ta Ta!!! Send me an email, love to have your opinion!!! info@pollytalk.com
