CULTURAL DOINGS: TIMOTHY
HITS
THE COLOR TRAIL
Timothy high brow met up with Tilly the culture
maven and off they did shuffle to paint the town
Red. "My dearest dear," said he. "New York's
awash in color cues. We'll get our color fix at the
Bus Terminal, see Van Gogh' Starry Night, and
get (In) formed by Color a la Carlos Cruz-Diez.
Then Art Deco is another echo at NYPL. Shall we
linger for awhile?" Tilly obliged with a smile.
Here's the scoop!!!
"Remember to Take Your Daily Color?" Timothy pointed out the colorful sign by artist Tattfoo Tan
(www.Tattfoo.com) with block upon block of rainbow colors, in a huge mural posted on the outside
of the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Color authority, your own PollyTalk says you can eat your
color and drink your color and that's good news in a gray concrete city cause with the promise of
a pot of luck at the end of the rainbow makes New York a colorful city. FREE Check it out at
www.portauthority.org.
Then of Tilly and Timothy went off to the Americas Society where they were (In) formed by
Color. Through his work Carlos Cruz-Diez wishes to engage the viewer in a direct chromatic
experience wherein the visitor walks into, through and around the shifting chromatic space. This
artwork consists of three separate light-infused color chambers. The maze of chromosaturation
and Chromatic walkway is a physical experience of magical proportions. FREE www.as-coa.org.

"I never knew the night could be so colorful," beamed Tilly. Dutch
painter, Vincent Van Gogh's, 'The Colors of the Night' takes the duo to
the Museum of Modern Art. Van Gogh's sun glows in 'Summer Evening
Near Arles" and then there's his famous 'Starry Night' with its jaundiced
glow of street-lamps and cafes. His nocturnal paintings amaze as do the
sun drenched landscapes in the exhibit. www.moma.org.
The enduring appeal of Art Deco design captures their eye at the New
York Public Library's 'Art Deco Design: Rhythm and Verve. "My dearest
dear," said Timothy who knew a thing or two about the era. "As a style
Art Deco captures the modernist spirit of the l920s and l930s, an age of
fashionable folly, energetic progress, and streamlined mechanization."
Talks accompany the exhibit: 'Fashion of the Art Deco Era,' on Oct. 7
and also Nov. 6. FREE OF CHARGE: www.nypl.org.
The French Embassy in the US gets into the modernist mood with
'Andree Putman, Beyond Style.' Her innovative design for Morgans, the
world's first boutique hotel, ushered in a new approach to luxury. One of
the exhibits centerpieces is the Voie Lactee black lacquer grand piano
which Putman designed for France's Pleyel, the oldest piano
manufacturer in the world. A prop in a red and white checkerboard
pattern holds up the lid and reappears in the sheet music holder. A must
to see. FREE. Until October 10th. Call ahead to check the schedule.
