FLEET IN NEW YORK
Never was the city so natty and never was
the city in such celebration as when the Great
White Fleet anchored in New York this week. Put
on your sailor suits and step aboard and discover
a host of historical and cultural events both
here and in nearby ports. Here's the scoop!!!
Columbus Day activities kick off with the
GREAT WHITE FLEET exhibition at Vanderbilt
Hall in Grand Central Station to celebrate the
100th anniversary (1908-2008) of the famed humanitarian assistance rendered by the U.S. Navy
to Italy. Heigh ho there, landlubbers can see the spectacular museum- quality exhibit with
Theodore Roosevelt, 26th president of the United States at the helm. He sent 16 battleships
painted white, the GREAT WHITE FLEET, on a peace mission around the world. However, in 1908
after a massive earthquake took up to 200,000 lives in Italy, Roosevelt sent the fleet then off the

coast of Egypt to Sicily where they stayed 6 mos. building homes and
villages in one of the first and greatest acts of humanitarian assistance this
country has performed for a foreign country. See the FREE exhibition daily

The famed Algonquin round table is alive and well at 123 East 24th
Street where The Algonquin Theatre pays homage to the legendary
characters and dubs theaters' Parker and Kaufman, rehearsal rooms
Benchley and Connolly. Artistic director, Tony Sportiello brings first class
performances at reasonable prices with "Sessions" a new musical opening
that says, "You'd have to be crazy to miss it! After all couldn't we all use a
little therapy?" Radio personality Joe Franklin adds, "I loved the show, I
didn't want it to end!" Should be fun, the show begins Oct. 28.

Clay Fest is all fired up! A celebration of clay takes place Saturday,
Oct. 25, l2:30-7PM in Westchester. Just hop the Grand Central Metro North
to New Rochelle and join the fun as the Sound Shore communities of New
Rochelle and Pelham bustle with art, music, food and more! Hop the FREE
trolley, departs from the Braemar Road parking lot of NR High School. Eight
participating artistic venues include "Elemental Color" at the Media Loft, 50
Webster Ave., 2-5 p.m., where ceramic artists include Peter A. Davis' iconic
ceramic domes and not to be missed his wall of fruit and vegetable tiles.

Get a double treat and go see artist/performer Mieko Yuki: Ba Ka Su
(BEWITCH) exhibition at the Ippodo Gallery, 521 W. 26th street, where her
ceramic Bakasu sculptures, Japanese word for bewitch" or "enchant"
emphasize the crafty magic of the feminist themes central to the artist's work
Oct. 2-25. While in New York Yuki will star in an off-Broadway production of
The Doll Sisters, an adaption of a well known Kabuki drama at La MaMa
Experimental theater in the East Village Oct. 23-Nov. 2.
