The high notes soar in a celestial place at St. George's Church where Artistic Director, Matthew Lewis, of St. George's Choral Society brings you a magnificent 3-part program: Faure-Requiem, Poulenc-Gloria and Penderecki-Sabat Mater with Paul Richard Olson at the organ. Marlene Hernandez, soprano and Christopher DeVage, baritone with the choral group of support singers perform on Sun. Diva Divine, opera stars like the Met's Dwayne Croft and Patrice Munsel, conductor Eve Queler and movie/TV actor Stephen Baldwin celebrate the winners at the famed Giulio Gari Interna-tional Vocal Competition at the New York Athletic Club, Nov. 16th. All this in memory of leading tenor and voice teacher Giulio Gari whose wife Gloria heads up the gala. Ah yes, I remember him well, took singing lessons when I aspired to be an opera singer. With a voice like an angel Diva, Amy Shoremount-Obra's "Lucia" at the Opera for Humanity was a celestial achievement, I became an instant fan. Along with her Edgardo, the brilliant tenor Jon-Michael Ball, the pair made an unforgettable performance at the Symphony in Space with the conductor David Gilbert and a superb orchestra and supporting cast. Then it's off to Yaddo, that Shangri-la for the gifted poet, author, playwright and composer who resided for FREE at the nation's premier art colony all because they were so talented. Showcased at the New York Public Library take a peak into the bucolic estate in Saratoga Springs, NY where the greats: Philip Roth, Sylvia Plath and John Cheever to name but a few, created works we know. Yes, I applied, as well as others better known than me like Katherine Anne Porter and Truman Capote all of us denied entry into this hallowed sanctuary.
