Doggone It!!! New York City's on a Leash
That's right!!! New York City has gone to the dogs in more ways than one. There's dog hotels,
dog boutiques, dog perambulators, doggie day care, dog salons, dog psychologists and even dog
whispers. Doggone it almost every young gal in town is toting a little dog around in a Gucci-Pucci
bag and some dogs are so tiny, my gosh you'd need a magnifying glass to see them.
To top it all off Doyle New York held its "Dogs in Art" brunch on Sunday. All sorts of dog
aficionados were there with their favorite canine, sipping champagne and noshing on delicacies.
Among the special guests were the therapy dogs and volunteers from Angel on a Leash and one
critter arrived wearing fluffy white angel wings just so that we knew its purpose in life. Paintings
from world famous artists including a stunning head of a bloodhound after Sir Edwin Landseer,
was a crowd pleaser, though the original head study by Landseer was painted in l836. Pugs,
poodles, Griffon, a terrier, a majestic Great Dane, a wee dachshund, a Pekingese, just far too
many portraits to mention.
However, Cassius Marcellus Collidge (l844-l934) commissioned portraits depicting dogs in various
human-like situations and these paintings with uncanny character expressions drew a chuckle or
two. A particular hit was a painting depicting a rather ominous gang of dogs sitting around a card
table. An accomplished cartoonist Coolidge is credited with creating the familiar life-size Boardwalk
cutouts, which he called Comic Foregrounds, into which one's head was placed so as to be
photographed as an amusing character. Dogs also had their photo opportunity doing just that as
dog owners took turns poking their dog's head through an opening of an oversized cardboard
version of the portrait, "Only a Pair of Deuces" illustrating a group of dogs playing cards. You can
still view the exhibition on Monday, Feb. ll, l0am-6pm. The Doyle "Dogs in Art Auction" takes place
on Tuesday, February 12 at lpm.
The Only Runway Show Where the Models Eat Meat and Wear Fur Coats: Watch the real thing?
Go to Madison Square Garden on Monday and Tuesday, Feb. ll-l2 when the world's greatest
show dogs in the world strut their stuff in Westminster's l32nd All Breed Dog Show. Over
l69-recognized breeds and new varieties, 2,500 dogs in all will be judged. Hey, these dogs have
their fans that sit in the bleachers and cheer the groups and Best-in-Show on to stardom. And just
so you know that dogs rule, the Empire State Building will light its tower in Westminster colors of
purple and gold on the nights of the dog show. Go to ww.westminsterkennelclub.org for specific
judging program dates and times.
Whew, it's a doggoned busy week. The Dog Fanciers Club holds its annual Westminster
Best-in-Show luncheon on Wed., February l3th at Sardi's Restaurant, always a sellout event,
where you will meet and dine with the Champion. Talk about celebrity, the Best-in-Show winner will
enjoy steak tartar shaped like a large bone and served on a silver platter and everyone will ohh
and ahh as the click of the camera captures it all for the TV and newspaper networks. The 2008
Best-in-Show judge, Dr. J. Donald Jones, will elaborate upon how he reached this much-awaited
decision. Can't wait to go to lunch with the doggie bunch and find out!!
All of this furbelow comes just in time for Valentine's Daycelebrations. I know I've just gone to the
dogs cause the first card that came in the mail had the cutest little dog on the cover holding a
valentine heart in its mouth, inside it read "I'm your #l fan. Happy Valentine's Day!"
Same to you all, fans of my column may you all have a doggone Happy Valentine's Day.
