NEW YORK CELEBRATES HENRY HUDSON

Happy Birthday Mr. Hudson.  My dear, you’re sure looking young for the four hundred years in
the making of this quadricentennial tribute.  A yearlong series of events celebrates Henry Hudson’
s momentous voyage and honors the past and the river that bears his name. The American River’
s at the MCNY, Francis Bacon’s at the Met and Laila’s film at MOMA. Here’s the scoop!!!

It’s been 400 years since Henry Hudson first sailed into New York Harbor in 1609 and arrived
in what would become New York city via the river that bears his name, and this year’s River Day,
to be held June 6th kicks off a weeklong event retracing Henry’s l50-mile journey up the river. It
all starts at the Statue of Liberty. Not to be missed is the flotilla of watercraft, great and small
which will assemble each day during the week and parade up the river behind lead flagships,
including a replica of Hudson’s Half Moon, along with Pete Steeger’s sloop Clearwater.  And if that
isn’t enough to take you out to the birthday party check out the happenings at www.mightyhudson.
com.

Speaking of the River, Fran Dunwell, author of The Hudson: America’s River (Columbia Univ.
Press, 2008), will explore how the Hudson River powered the growth of the country’s greatest
industrial and financial empire, and also produced leading American writers, engineers, and
environmentalists.  In this illustrated lecture, Dunwell will reveal how Henry Hudson’s voyage
launched a 400-year legacy for the river that bears his name. Presented in conjunction with the
exhibition Amsterdam/New Amsterdam: The Worlds of Henry Hudson. Reservations required. $6
Museum members, $8 seniors and students; $12 non-members. www.mcny.org/public-programs/

A landmark exhibition, Francis Bacon: A Centenary Retrospective marks the centenary of the
artist’s birth in Dublin in 1909. This is the first major exhibition in New York in 20 years devoted to
one of the most important painters of the 20th century. The exhibit features 153 works that span
the entirety of the artist’s full and celebrated career and focuses on the key subjects and themes
that run through his extraordinary creative output which examines Bacon’s sources and working
processes. Through August 16th. www.metmuseum.org.

Laila’s Birthday is a celebration of Rashid Masharawi’s films which have a weeklong run in MOMA’
s Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters from May 27th through June lst. Laila’s Birthday is set in the
filmmaker’s chaotic hometown of Ramallah. The film follows a Palestinian judge turned taxi driver
who is trying to arrange a birthday cake and gift for his young daughter’s birthday. It turns out to
be an epic task with twists and turns as he navigates the corruption, hassles and Israeli
checkpoints around the city.  Check out the screening schedule at www.moma.org.
