THE BUDDHIST UNIVERSE showcasing more than 60 magnificent works: paintings, sculpture,
drawing, metalwork, stoneware, textiles and lacquer the exhibit illustrates the exceptional and
complex world of Esoteric Buddhist art in Japan. A set of monumental 13th-century mandalas are
displayed along with iconographic drawings that explains the character and placement of the
deities. The mandalas were copied and used as a powerful tool to spread the teachings of the
Shingon (“True Word”), a school of Esoteric Buddhimsm founded by Kukai’s fellow monk Saicho
(767-822). In the Sackler Wing see Astonishing Silhouettes: Western fashion in 19th-century
Japanese prints. The second installation is a selection of the masterworks by virtuoso lacquer
painter Shibata Zeshin. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1000 Fifth Ave. at 82nd St. www.

Ave, at 86th St.  Gustav Klimt, president of the Vienna Secession, described the artist as the
“outstanding talent among the younger generation.” A key figure in the history of the work of
expressionism Focus presents Kokoschka’s paintings and drawings.  The artist animates his
sitters illuminated from within rather than from an exterior light source.  Highlighted among the
permanent collection works on exhibit pay particular relevance to present-day social conditions,
from corrupt plutocrats in a debauched civic landscape to etchings of crippled war veterans facing
a pitiless society. www.neuegalerie.org.

“ISABEL TOLEDO: FASHION FROM THE INSIDE OUT” offers a muraled time line of the
designer’s major career events. Yes, that famous lemongrass silk and tulle ensemble worn by
First Lady Michelle Obama on Inauguration Day in January takes center stage in the exhibit. In the
musuem’s press release,  the First Lady states, “I absolutely adored my Inauguration Day
ensemble,…and I am happy that it will be part of the exhibit so that others can appreciate the
creativity and craftsmanship of one of America’s great female designers.”  You, too, can wax
poetic over the exhibit which is free and open to the public. The Museum at FIT, located at The
Fashion Institute of Technology, 27th Street and 7th Ave.  www.themuseumatfit.org.  Toledo says,

be comfortable.”
