The Possibilities Of A Paintball Field In The
Bronx Excites Many
By Hector Farrulla

Today was a great day for New York City Paintball. The sport is becoming recognized and
accepted by more people here in the Bronx than ever before! Andrew Perretti, of IBC
Solutions scheduled a meeting with the owners of the Turtle Cove Golf & Baseball Complex,
Team BPS, and Race Gun USA, Inc., at The Bronx Chamber Of Commerce Luncheon on
February 15, 2007, where our goal was to set up a subsequent meeting with the New York
City Parks & Recreation Commissioner, Adrian Benope or his designee, for talking points
about bringing Paintball to the Bronx. The owners of Turtle Cove were very enthusiastic
about converting a portion of their property for paintball use. Turtle Cove has over 30 acres
of land which is considered a paintballer's paradise. It has the capability for both
tournament style and woodsball game fields in one facility. Most Bronx residents that
indulge in the sport usually have to endure long travel times to play, but that doesn't stop
the thousands of New York City and Bronx paintballers from making their weekend journeys
to far away places.

For years, my Bronx and Long Island based team has traveled to places as far as
Pennsylvania to compete in tournaments and events. Once there, we always encounter
players and teams from our own back yards. It is common knowledge among the New York
City Paintball community that there is no "legitimate place" to play their favorite sport within
the city limits. The Bronx is in dire need for an outdoor facility. Many NYC and Bronx
paintballers are already engaging in "Outlaw Ball", because there are no other accessible
places to play in our borough. Outlaw Ball is paintball, played outside an actual field,
illegally, and usually in a secluded, wooden area. Outlaw ball is played in places like this to
avoid being noticed by local authorities and to avoid injuries to pedestrians. Even the
people who participate in this illegal format, play as safe as possible. Never in my 13 plus
years in this game have I met a paintballer who plays with the intentions of hurting another
player. In fact, the majority of paintballers are extremely serious about paintball safety. It's
not unusual for players at a field to take the role of referee, and reprimand less
experienced players who break the rules: goggles on at all times in playing areas, and
barrel plugs on in safe areas. It is our mantra, and it is what keeps us safe as we play.

As we try to disassociate paintball markers from actual fire arms, there will always be the
skeptics who say that this sport is about violence. People with guns shoot people. Athletes
with paintball markers mark players. It's all about fun and having a good time. Maybe it is
time to reevaluate what exactly is considered safe recreation for our kids? NYC Parks and
Recreation presently promotes activities such as: inline skating, hockey, and karate in our
parks. Surely participants can get hurt in these approved activities/sports which encourage
physical contact. Inline Skating is not as violent or an extreme sport, but we all know what
can happen when you fall on hard cement at a high rate of speed. No one ever plays
paintball with malicious intent, and people that do are always asked to leave the premises
immediately! In any paintball field, a bad apple is never given the opportunity to spoil the
bunch. It is immediately tossed out of the responsible bunch, and this is what keeps the
sport safe and growing every year.

The Sports Group Manufacturers Association reports that the sport of paintball is actually
safer to play with less reports of injuries than: bowling, golf, and fishing. Imagine a place
where children and adults can have great fun, while learning about honor, teamwork, and
communication? "Applying paintball skills and attributes into youthful social circles may
even contribute to a decrease in gang violance." says Andrew Perretti, a local public safety
and community advocate. Imagine an establishment, right here in the Bronx that will
generate revenue and popularity for our borough, while providing a place where the whole
family can enjoy an exciting and healthy activity.

We our closer than ever to making this dream possible right here in our Bronx. Stay tuned
for more updates as they develop. If you would like to participate in this advocacy issue, or
just want to learn more about the second fastest growing extreme sport in the world, visit
our E-Zine at: www.ballspersecond.com, and drop us an email.
